Our Challenge for all Abilities
A whole-school commitment to ensuring every student is appropriately challenged to achieve their full potential.

Our Approach
At The Highcrest Academy, we believe that every student should be challenged to achieve their very best, regardless of their starting point.
Our approach is built around a culture of Challenge for All, where high expectations, ambitious teaching and a carefully sequenced curriculum ensure that all students are supported to think deeply, work independently and achieve highly.
Challenge is not about giving some students more work than others. It is about ensuring that every student experiences the right level of challenge, enabling them to develop confidence, resilience and independence as learners.
National Recognition
Our commitment to both academic challenge and inclusive practice has been recognised nationally.
“The many strengths of the school’s provision are clearly demonstrated… with continued evidence of a commitment to improve both provision and outcomes for more able learners, and to embed high quality teaching and learning.” – NACE, 2026
“Inclusive practice is at the very heart of teaching and learning at the school.” – IQM Flagship Assessor, 2025
Together, these reflect a key principle at Highcrest: high levels of challenge are accessible to all students.
Challenge in the Classroom
Challenge begins with high-quality teaching in every lesson.
Our curriculum is ambitious, knowledge-rich and carefully sequenced, enabling students to build understanding over time and apply their learning in increasingly complex ways.
Teachers plan opportunities for students to:
- think critically and make connections
- solve problems and apply knowledge independently
- explain, justify and refine their ideas
- develop increasing independence in their learning
As a fully inclusive school, we ensure our curriculum is inclusive, aspirational and responsive, so that all students can access learning, be stretched appropriately and make strong progress over time.
Supporting Every Student
Alongside high-quality classroom teaching, we provide a range of targeted support and opportunities to ensure that all students can succeed.
This includes:
- careful identification of students’ starting points and needs
- targeted academic support and intervention
- pastoral support to remove barriers to learning
- opportunities for enrichment and wider experiences
We also focus on developing the characteristics of successful learners, including resilience, independence, curiosity and confidence.
For students who require particularly high levels of academic challenge, additional opportunities are provided through our Excelling Students provision, including the identification of Higher Prior Attainers, More Able and Most Able students and a range of enrichment experiences.
